Olympus continues to push digital’s optical envelope with the industry’s widest non-fisheye lens for sub-full-frame DSLRs. A 14-28mm equivalent ($1,595, street), even by 35mm standards, this lens is extremely wide.
Its unusually large and double-sided aspheric elements, plus multiple elements of extra-low- and super-extra-low-dispersion glass (a total of three) help deliver performance unequalled in the ultrawide digital-only zoom category.
HANDS ON:
At 1 pound, 12 ounces, the lens is quite hefty by digital ultrawide and fixed-aperture standards. In comparison, fixed f/4 models from Nikon, Pentax, and Tokina, all 12-24mm, weigh only a pound (roughly). The Olympus is also more than an inch longer than these other lenses. However, it is internal-zooming — the length doesn’t grow as you zoom it out.
Other physical distinctions: a fixed lenshood, extremely smooth manual focusing, fast but slightly noisy AF, and protective gaskets and O-rings to repel dust and moisture. It does not accept threaded filters — common with front elements as convex as this one.
IN THE LAB:
At the three tested focal lengths, SQF tests found sharpness and contrast well into the Excellent range, very slightly ahead of most of the comparable lenses we’ve tested, especially at larger output sizes.

Zuiko Digital 12-60mm Lens
The Zuiko Digital 12-60mm Pro lens is a high-performance standard wide zoom lens that features the Supersonic Wave Drive (SWD) lens drive mechanism and covers a versatile zoom range that’s the equivalent of a 24-120mm (35 mm) film format lens.
The newly developed Olympus-original SWD has made possible an ultra-fast, whisper-quiet and high-precision AF system.
Optimized for use with the concurrently released E-3 camera, this lens enables the E-3 to demonstrate the full power of its high-speed capability, providing the fastest autofocusing available in the world* using a standard zoom lens.
*Among interchangeable lenses for Digital SLR cameras. Measurement based on our in-house measuring standard. (As of Oct. 17, 2007, surveyed by Olympus).
With minimal geometric distortion at its widest angle, the digital-dedicated design ensures high-definition performance with clear, crisp images from edge to edge even when used at fully open apertures!
This lens also boasts impressive close-up shooting capability, allowing users to shoot from as close as 25 cm throughout the zoom range.
The splash-proof and dust-proof design and robust construction makes it suitable for professional use.

With its approximately 14-times zoom ratio covering from wide-angle to super-telephoto ranges, this versatile lens handles a great variety of applications without the need for lens changes. When mounted on a Pentax digital SLR camera body, the Pentax DA 18-250mm zoom lens offers an approximately 14-times zoom ratio that covers the range from 27.5mm wide angle to 383mm super-telephoto in the 35mm format. Without the need for lens changes, it can be used for a wide variety of applications.
Pentax DA 18-250mm AL IF lens The applications ranges from such standard applications as landscape photography, snapshots and portrait at frequently used focal lengths, to specialized applications like sports and wildlife photography at the super-telephoto range. Incorporating one extra-low dispersion (ED) and two aspherical (AL) optical elements in its optics, the smc Pentax DA 18-250mmF3.5-6.3ED AL [IF] lens effectively compensates for the adverse effects of various aberrations, assuring outstanding image description.
Pentax DA 18-250mm lens – Design This lens is exclusively designed for use with Pentax digital SLR cameras, with its image circle perfectly proportioned to their image sensor size (23.5mm x 15.7mm). Since the coating, curvature and position of all optical elements are optimized for the characteristics of digital images, it effectively minimizes annoying flare and ghost images in the resulting images. Furthermore the new Pentax 18-250mm lens offers An extra-short minimum focusing distance of 0.45 meters over the entire zoom range and an Inner-focus (IF) mechanism to avoid lens extension during focusing.
Pentax DA 18-250mm specifications • Lens mount: Pentax KAF mount • Lens construction: 16 elements in 13 groups • Angle of view: 76° ~6.5° (when mounted on a Pentax D-SLR body) • Number of diaphragm blades: 7 • Minimum aperture: F22 ~ F45 • Minimum focusing distance: 0.45m (1.48ft) • Filter size: 62mm • Maximum magnification: 0.28X • Dimensions: 75mm (maximum diameter) x 85.5mm (length) • Weight: 455g (16.0oz) (without lens hood)

Sigma has introduced an HSM version of its optically stabilized f/3.5-6.3 18mm-200mm autofocus zoom lens, which we tested recently. The addition of a built-in hypersonic motor (HSM) allows quiet, high-speed focusing and makes the lens fully compatible with all Nikon digital SLRs, including those that do not use body-driven autofocus motors, including the D40 and D40x. The lens is designed to be used with cameras that use APS-C-size sensors. Sigma warns that using the lens with larger sensors and film-based 35mm cameras will cause vignetting.
The lens offers a minimum focus distance of 17.7 inches throughout its focal-length range and a maximum magnification of 1:3.9. A magnification scale is displayed on the lens barrel, which also incorporates a zoom lock switch. The optics include a Special Low Dispersion element and three aspherical elements, as well as multi-layer coatings, to minimize optical flaws. The lens has a 72mm filter diameter.
