Police use amateur’s photo to identify officer who told him to delete all his pictures

Photo News - No Comments » - Posted on February, 20 at 10:03 am

A picture that inadvertently remained in a photographer’s camera after police told him to delete his images is being used to help identify the officer at the centre of the controversy.

Photo enthusiast John Kelly says he was left humiliated and feeling like a criminal after a police community support officer (PCSO) ordered him to delete his pictures В– telling him he first needed permission before taking photographs of people in public.

The incident took place in Blackpool, Lancashire, a week ago.

The photographer realised afterwards that he had deleted all but one of the pictures in his Nikon D40 digital SLR.

And Lancashire police today requested the image, which had been forwarded to the ‘s newsdesk, to help the force identify the officer.

Once we had gained the photographer’s permission, we promptly despatched the picture to Lancashire Constabulary, by email.

A police spokeswoman said that the officer involved could be one of three PCSOs on duty in the area at the time.

As we reported yesterday, Kelly was first told to delete pictures that included the officer in the frame.

The PCSO then apparently added: ‘You can’t take pictures of people without asking their permission.’

Kelly insists that the officer could only be seen in the background of his photographs, taken in a busy shopping area of the town.

Police say it could take several days before they are able to issue a press statement about the incident, after speaking to the officer concerned.

The incident is the latest in a series of clashes between police officers and photographers taking pictures in public places in the UK.

Canon EOS 40D Review at The Digital Picture

Cameras, Tips Tricks - 1 Comment » - Posted on October, 9 at 9:31 am

The Digital Picture reviews the Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR and writes – “The 40D is a camera that will appeal to a vast range of photographers from advanced amateurs to working photojournalists and wedding photographers. All will appreciate its exceptional image quality, ease of operation, speed, modest weight and size, compatibility with the vast Canon system and very reasonable price.” [Canon 40D White Paper] I agree. The 30D already sees a lot of professional use – The 40D offers enough improvements over the 30D to make an upgrade justifiable. Watch for them at the next wedding or other event you attend. And no less important will be the huge number of family memories preserved with the 40D. With its all-around good performance combined with the densest Canon DSLR sensor available, the 40D will have a large number of wildlife (especially bird) photographers as its owners. I’ll personally be making the 40D part of my kit (replacing my 30D).”

Nikon Picture Control System

Photo News - No Comments » - Posted on September, 2 at 7:32 pm

Nikon Picture Control System : Nikon is pleased to announce the development of their new Picture Control System, which enables users to easily adjust images as desired, and to obtain the same picture tones with different cameras at the same settings. Picture Control is a new function to adjust images that responds to users’ various requirements. It enables selection and adjustment to create pictures easily according to the skills of users ranging from novices to professionals. When settings are the same, even with different cameras, you can achieve the same picture tone. To make the most of the Picture Control System’s advantages, Nikon is also planning to offer “Option Picture Control” to be downloaded from Nikon websites.
Additionally Nikon will introduce additional Option Picture Controls to meet changing market needs. Picture Control System offers four fundamental setting options – Standard, Neutral, Vivid and Monochrome – enabling image parameters (sharpening, tone compensation, brightness, tone and saturation) to be easily adjusted and customized. Especially, the Standard and Vivid options feature a Quick Adjustment setting that allows image parameter (sharpening, tone compensation and saturation) adjustments simultaneously. Also, a grid display function helps you to understand each Picture Control feature by showing it visually on the LCD monitor.

Nikon Picture Control System – Storage and Control
Each Picture Control can be managed as a file by saving the settings. Customized Picture Control settings can be stored as Custom Picture Controls. Furthermore, stored Custom Picture Control files can be used with other Picture Control-compatible cameras via memory card, or transferred to PCs to be used with Nikon original software, stored in memory cards or hard disks, or shared among users through the internet.

Nikon Picture Control System management – Software
The system can also be used in conjunction with Nikon software. Photo Finishing Software Capture NX, to be released at the same time as the D3 and D300, for example, lets you adjust Custom Picture Control and develop a RAW image taken with a digital SLR camera that does not have the Picture Control System.
